Note

This page captures dean's list calculation and notes from the meeting with admissions, IR and registrars from various campuses.

Motivation:

The UMA Provost hopes to identify a process for considering ALL coursework for dean's list for matriculated UMA students regardless of the institution where those credits are taken. UMPI is also considering something similar, as some programs (Nursing and Education) require students to take courses at other UMS institutions (which then do not factor into their GPA for the dean's list). System IR was approached by Rosa Redonnett and Robert Placido about how to help resolve this issue.

We need to create a view specifically for the purposes of calculating GPA for students that includes grades at all institutions, and not merely their home ones, for the purposes of supporting this Dean's List issue.

Academic achievement in summer courses is not considered for inclusion in the list.

All matriculated and special students (e.g., Teacher Certification, UMS Away) are eligible if:

  • They have completed at least 6 or more credits graded on an A-F basis, excluding developmental courses, during the semester in question. Credits earned on a Pass/Fail basis and in developmental courses (numbered below 100) will not count toward the 6 credit hours;
  • They have achieved a semester average of 3.3 or better and have earned no grade below a C in any course that semester. The semester average for Dean’s List purposes will not include grades from developmental courses, nor grades from classes in sessions which end after the Regular Session;
  • They have no Incompletes or missing grades for that semester in courses which have ended by the end of the Regular Session, and they have not withdrawn from 6 or more credits during the term; and
  • Their academic performance is otherwise satisfactory.

The Dean’s List will be formulated 28 days after the end of finals week for that semester. Any final grades or grade changes submitted after that time will not affect a student’s Dean’s List status for that term.

University of Southern Maine

At the end of the fall and spring semesters, full-time, undergraduate degree students (defined as those who completed 12 credit hours or more, with a minimum of 12 letter graded credits A-F, unless specific Pass/Fail credits are required by the student's program), and excluding developmental credits with course numbers less than 100, with grade point average of 3.6 or above will be placed on the Dean's List.

Students with Incomplete or Missing Grades (I or MG) at the point when the Dean's List is produced (approximately 35 days after the end of a fall or spring semester) will not be eligible for the Dean's List. A notation will be made on the transcript of those who earn the Dean's List distinction. Those students on the Dean's List whose names appear in the public directory of the University will have their names released to the news media.

Students who attend both the fall and the spring semesters as part-time degree students and who meet the above full-time Dean's List criteria when the fall and spring semesters are combined are eligible for the academic year Dean's List at the end of the spring semester. A notation will be made on the transcript of those who earn the academic year Dean's List distinction.

Dean’s List Students who have completed in a semester a minimum load of 12 graded semester hours of degree credit, exclusive of pbs courses, and who have earned a grade point average of 3.300 or better are eligible in that semester for the Dean’s List.

The Dean’s List is distinguished by three categories:

  • Honors List-recognizes achievement of a semester average between 3.300 and 3.599;
  • High Honors List - recognizes achievement of a semester average between 3.600 and 3.799;
  • Highest Honors List - recognizes achievement of a semester average 3.800 or above.

Students who were not eligible for the Dean's List at the time of final grading due to having classes graded with NP or I, and who later complete those classes and now meet the requirements, may contact the Registrar and request to be added to the Dean's List retroactively.

Graduation with Distinction Students receive graduation honors of distinction in one of three categories by attaining the requisite Grade Point Averages (GPAs) in all course work taken at UMPI.
