Mission Statement
The Power BI Governance Team serves as the champion for the UMS Power BI installation by establishing policies governing the varying aspects of the UMS implementation, fostering a data-informed culture. This team supports the sustainable expansion of the UMS Power BI implementation through advocacy and development of documentation and training resources. The ultimate goal of the Power BI Governance Team is to expand access to data and analytics while encouraging a culture of data literacy and ethical data use throughout the University of Maine System.

Guiding Principles
Ensure the security of institutional data, with emphasis on data segregation and access control, while reinforcing UMS data classification standards.
Work in close coordination with UMS Data Governance to ensure consistency in data management and stewardship practices.
Maintain a manageable expansion rate for Power BI access and resources.
Make policy, access, and management recommendations to leadership and parties of interest based on equitable access to resources throughout the UMS.
Detailed Activities of the PBI Governance Group
Activities
Brief Description
Access
Determine access criteria to Power BI licenses and resources.
Manage tenant settings and associated groups.
Communication
Communicate with UMS Data Governance and other UMS groups as necessary to make sure PBI aligns with existing initiatives and to make sure DG and the wider community receives important updates and communications regarding the Power BI project.
Dataset Management
Prioritize datasets to be certified in Power BI to assist the widest audience in building reports.
Coordinate representation of functional and technical staff for the creation, testing, and certification of datasets managed centrally.
Recommend security settings for roles and datasets.
Group Management
Assign membership to subgroups as needed. Some potential subgroups include standing groups for documentation and standardized data sets.
PBI User Support
Create and maintain a template for documentation of the Power BI service, datasets, and workflows.
Create and maintain a template for a support structure.
Create and maintain a template for education and training.
Resource Management
Monitor usage of the system through defined key performance indicators (KPIs), user metrics, and resource allocation reports to aid resource management decisions.
Analyze the resources necessary for management, support, training, and documentation of the Power BI system, and advocate for additional resources as appropriate.
