The UMS utilizes a four-tiered data classification system, outlined below (full details in the UMS Data Classification APL). Data users are responsible for being familiar with this classification system and making decisions that comply with the system’s guidance.
Restricted data has very specific requirements regarding all aspects of usage, and will not often be eligible for publication. Some restricted data points may be publishable in rare circumstances, and only in the aggregate.
Data managers (if on staff)
Coordinators/liaisons of regulatory compliance (if named)
Department heads for data in question
Confidential
FERPA student data
University financial data
Confidential data points are never publishable individually but may be published in the aggregate without underlying identifiable information to various institutions, schools/colleges, and/or departments. Aggregated confidential data may also be published on public-facing university websites, as long as information included in the report has already been approved for public consumption. Publication guidelines (whether internal or external) are determined by a need-to-know correspondence between the data and the area (department, school/college, institution, public website, etc.)

Internal data points may often be published within the institution, and often much more broadly than Confidential data points. Disaggregated Internal data are often shared more locally (e.g., within a department) than aggregated Internal data).
