DARTS : Public Institutional Research & Campus Reports

Each institution—separately and as part of the University of Maine System (UMS)—is required to provide certain information to state and national reporting bodies. This page contains examples of, and links to, some of these published reports. Although the data reported may be considered confidential, (see UMS Data Classifications) it is aggregated to maintain anonymity.

University data classification levels apply to raw data in their row-level, disaggregated form. Employees who work with institutional data frequently aggregate data points to derive group or programmatic descriptive statistics and explore trends. Data users’ responsibilities include protecting the disaggregate data and making responsible decisions regarding what data, in which aggregated forms, may be published. Several types of confidential, and sometimes even restricted, data are published in aggregate. Data users should consult with their departments and functional area colleagues regarding minimum cell sizes to ensure privacy; in general, cell sizes of N<5 should not be published.

Data users should consult the representative list of confidential data that is published in aggregate (below) on UMS websites already; data users looking to publish items not present in that list should fill out the Public Website Publication Request Form and await guidance.

Examples of such publicly available data are below.

  1. University-level enrollment (disaggregated by sex, ethnicity/race, full-time status) (Available in IPEDS)
  2. Enrollment by major (disaggregated by sex, residency, class level, full-time status)

Common Data Set Reports

The Common Data Set (CDS) initiative is a collaborative effort among data providers in the higher education community and publishers as represented by the College Board, Peterson’s, and U.S. News & World Report. The combined goal of this collaboration is to improve the quality and accuracy of information provided to all involved in a student’s transition into higher education, as well as to reduce the reporting burden on data providers.

IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) Data

IPEDS collects data on postsecondary education in the United States in the following areas: institutional characteristics, institutional prices, admissions, enrollment, student financial aid, degrees and certificates conferred, student persistence and success (retention rates, graduation rates, and outcome measures), institutional human resources, fiscal resources, and academic libraries. This data is available for retrieval for all UMS institutions.
